We are so happy and appreciative of @mbc_books for gifting us this copy! The good news is that it published in May so it’s available now! This is a good one and really has so much going on that I hope this post does it justice!
This story starts in 2016 but reverts back to 1942 while Mari is visiting Martha’s Vineyard, trying to decipher a note that her late mother wrote. All it said was a name of a famous painter. As she visits this woman, she learns the story of Briar, Cadence, Bess and Gram who were holding down the fort during WW2 on their farm.
Briar is convinced she sees German U-boats off the coast of their beloved island but has called in so many unconfirmed tips that she has earned the unfortunate nickname of Briar the Liar. However, the deeper she digs, the more she is convinced that there is a spy on their island.
Cadence longs to travel and write. She and her best friend Bess decide to start a book club for some sort of normalcy but get pulled in to Briar’s spy conspiracy when a German soldier washes up on their beaches asking for their help in defecting.
Mari is fascinated by the stories she is being told and soon learns how it all connects to her. A connection that runs deeper than she ever could have imagined!
