A love story not only between Isaac and Marie-Noelle but a love story between Haitians and their beloved country.
In this fictional story, Isaac is a descendant of Toussaint Louverture ( the leader of Haiti who led the revolution and freed Haiti from slavery) and Marie- Noelle is a beautiful woman who has been offered a modeling contract in New York. Isaac’s dream is to revive Haiti and achieve the goals for Haiti that Toussaint fought and strived for. Marie-Noelle feels she can do more good by moving to the US where she can make a lot more money to send back to Isaac to help fund the cause. Difficulties and danger threaten their relationship but they are each committed to their love for each other and their country.
The book hops back and forth between present day and the 1800’s during Haiti’s revolution. This is an enlightening and hopeful story. The conflicts that are discussed are well known to Casey and I and it is refreshing to read about the hopes and dreams that the characters in this book portray. They mimic the hopes and dreams of our friends in Haiti. We love Haiti very much and hope that one day the people will prosper in the way that Toussaint envisioned for the people of Haiti. I highly recommend this book, it really gives a lot of insight into the struggles of Haiti and the love and pride that it’s people have for their country.
