This is your next read! Casey and I read a lot of books set in WW2 and I have never read one quite like this or from this perspective.
We get to follow two parallel storylines in East Prussia. Young Ilse lives on her family farm. At first, they are surviving the war on relatively good terms. Germany has ordered Polish slaves to work the farm with them and she becomes friends with Janusz, who loves to tell her stories.
Young Arno’s dad has been forced to join the Reich. He desperately misses his children and sickly wife. An ambush results in his getting shot and sent home, addicted to Demerol and no longer the father that Arno remembers.
Both families find themselves on the run and away from the only homes they have known.
