I recently went to Hawaii’s Volcano National Park and hiked down into the crater of one of the volcanos. It’s hard to see, but if you look closely, you can see the smoke in the background of one of the craters.
This place was perfect for Daughter of Fire by Sofia Robleda! A historical fiction novel about a time that I’ve always wondered about but never really understood. Catalina is part Spanish and part Mayan, she’s born about 30 years after the Spanish invasion of Guatemala in the mid-1500s. She’s born into privilege, her father is a member of the ruling oppressive Spanish hierarchy but she isn’t ready to let go of her mother’s heritage. If she embraces her mother’s beliefs, that ones that killed her own mother, she is risking her life and her father’s position.
This is a beautifully written story and has piqued my interest in this part of history. I thought this was a great spot for the Daughter of Fire to photograph!
Thank you @otrpr for this gifted copy! Daughter of Fire was published last month and available on our Amazon storefront!
