Strange Eden is set on the island of Nassau in the Bahamas, I’ve been there several times and found it fascinating to read about the history. It’s the 1700s and Eliza follows her new husband from England to the mysterious Bahamas, married life and Nassau was not the adventure she expected. She is horrified to find out Charles, her husband is the owner of slaves and now she’s trapped literally in her own house. Eliza is fiercely intelligent, and I was right by her side while reading this book.
Alyssa and I have a nonprofit for children in Haiti, we’ve spent a lot of time in the Caribbean, and we’ve read a lot about Haiti’s history and the first uprising of slaves to free themselves. I couldn’t help but feel a deep sympathy for the characters in Strange Eden.
This is a well-researched and beautifully written novel. I am so grateful for the chance to read Strange Eden and am looking forward to the second book in this series!
