Boat Baby by Vicky Nguyen, when she was just a toddler Vicky’s family escaped the communist government in Vietnam.  They truly fled by boat and they were attacked by pirates, but they made it safely to Malasia.  A wonderful family in Oregon sponsored them and off they were to the US!

I adored reading about Vicky’s story, she talks about her struggles growing up in a foreign country.  She wants to be American but doesn’t always understand the social cues that other American kids understand. Sometimes she’s too American for her family and sometimes too Asian for her friends.  

I can’t help but connect with stories like these.  I loved Vicky’s honesty about the struggles her family went through in the US, and her determination to be a great television journalist.
