A Castle in Brooklyn by Shirley Russak Wachtel was sent to us by @otrpr!!!

I started reading this one and was fully hooked from the very first chapter!

This story starts during WW2 and spans across many decades. Jacob is hiding in a barn from the Nazis when he hears someone sneak in. When he finds out it isn’t a Nazi but a young boy also looking for a place to hide, he is relieved and also excited to finally have a companion to talk with. Their luck does run out when they are captured but they manage to escape and eventually find their way to the USA. As the decades pass, their friendship thrives and grows. However, tragedy strikes Jacob’s young family and he has a hard time coming to terms with the loss. Old unresolved feelings of his parents’ horrific deaths play a part in his silent grieving. As he pushes his wife and his friend away, he experiences the ultimate betrayal. They all try to navigate their way through one of the most difficult times in their lives while not being able to rely on each other for the first time ever.

This is a lovely story about friendship and love but it’s also heartbreaking at times. It’s a very good book and I highly recommend!!! It published Jan 1 and is the perfect book to start off 2023 with!
