Deluca tells the story of recently released asylum patient, Clara Blackstone and England’s first female serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton. Clara has been wrongly locked away for the past year when a new doctor at the asylum declares her sane and sends her home, much to her husband’s dismay. While trying to fit in with society, she starts volunteering to read and bring the Word to female prisoners. She knows that Mary Ann Cotton is being held while awaiting trial and she feels a most unusual calling enticing her to visit Mary Ann. They form an unlikely friendship of sorts all the while many people keep warning Clara about her however, Mary Ann correctly guesses that Clara’s husband is drugging her every night. This causes Clara to see her husband in a new light as her obsession with Mary Ann grows.
