Amerigo Speranza lives with his mother in southern Italy. Northerners have been tasked with helping their fellow countrymen by taking in children from the south temporarily. Amerigo soon finds out that he is one of the children going to the north on the children’s train. He has to leave his mother behind and learn a new way of life, all at the young age of seven. He wrestles with the love of his new life versus the home and mother he left behind. When it is finally time to go back home, he finds himself conflicted.
This book is all about his journey, his regrets, his successes and his failures. I loved the characters in this book and the story itself is fascinating.
