This is a sweet little mystery novel that is effortlessly engaging. I immediately fell in love with the main character, Hana. In the late 1800’s, when she was just a girl, she and her father were living in poverty and he would allow her to be painted for money. One fateful day, a woman was admiring a particularly intriguing painting of her, one that captured the magic of her golden eyes and decided that she had to have Hana as her own. She set off to find her and purchased her for two bags of gold coins.
Hana grew up with her and had luxuries that she never would have had with her father, however, she resented her adoptive mother and her crazy rules and peculiarities. When her adopted mother is accused of murder, she finds that she must try to find out the truth, or possibly be faced with returning to a life of poverty, which she wants to avoid at all costs. One clue she needs to find is the missing painting of her, wherever that painting is, she is sure to find the real killer.
