I’ve always been interested in Nellie Bly but didn’t know many details about her life as one of the first female journalists ever!
I was super excited when Bloomsbury Publishing reached out to us about Mad Woman! This is based on the true events of her amazing investigative journalism. Nellie heads to New York determined to work with one of the top newspapers, but quickly finds out, nobody is willing to hire a woman.
She proposes a very risky plan to the Globe, she will attempt to get herself committed to the asylum on Blackwell’s Island, faking insanity to expose the terrible treatment of patients at the asylum. The plan goes smoothly and Nellie suddenly finds herself in an extremely violent and disturbing situation. The abuse is beyond what she could have imagined and now she’s unsure how she will ever get out. She proclaims her sanity many times and at one point breaks down and tells the truth that she’s working for the Globe. She’s dismissed and declared even more insane, because women would never report for the Globe.
This was completely fascinating and difficult to read at times. Many of the women were committed to the asylum were not insane, they could be sent there by a husband that no longer wanted to be married or even they spoke out to often.
Mad Woman by Louisa Treger is a must read! This published on 8/23/22 so it’s available now! And you can find this on our Amazon storefront!
