When Ruth Applebaum marries and moves to Philadelphia, she had no idea that the wives there were expected to follow strict rules. It is the 1960s, but she grew up with a father that wanted her to be educated and happy. She does her best to fit in and please her new mother in law but isn’t too thrilled when she finds herself pushed into etiquette classes.
Ruth finds all of these well behaved wives to be rather strange, they always put their husbands first and never consider their own feelings. She has recently finished law school and knows she will never be happy spending all day at home, where her only concern is the house and her husband.
When she starts to connect with some of the girls at her etiquette classes, she realizes something very disturbing is happening with her friend Carrie. She is determined to break the social norm and help Carrie, even if it risks upsetting her MIL and new friends.
Well Behaved Wives by Amy Sue Nathan addresses domestic violence. I loved seeing how the women came together and even her mother in law surprised me! I hope you get a chance to read this book, I loved the writing and am already downloading other books by this author!
